Icy highways and snow-covered roads can make it twice as difficult for heavy duty trucks to maneuver since a bigger rig often demands maneuvering skills and greater skid control than smaller vehicles.

But the challenges brought about by the cold season do not end there. Some truck parts can be extremely vulnerable to the cold weather. It pays to know which of these parts are more susceptible to cold weather damage, how to prevent it, and what to do in case it happens to you.

HEATED HEADLIGHTS

Invest in heated headlamps to improve visibility by preventing ice, slush and snow build up.

AIR DRYER

Air Dryers keep water from entering the brake line and causing it to freeze. Make sure your air dryer is working and change the filter if needed before you hit the road.

WIPER BLADES & FLUID

Make sure you have a good set of tire chains and emergency traction aids like AutoSock or Get-Go chains for each drive wheel is a must.

FUEL ADDITIVES

Each time you fuel up, add anti-gel additives to avoid your diesel from freezing up!

TRACTION AIDS

ANTI-FREEZE

Prevent your engine block from freezing by using a 50/50 mixture of anti-freeze and water. In temperatures colder than -34, bump up the percentage of anti-freeze to 60%.

TIRE PRESSURE

Cold weather can deflate your tires, which causes faster wear and poor fuel mileage. Check your tire pressure regularly and adjust accordingly.

ENGINE BLOCK HEATER

Diesel fuel engines require more heat to get started then gasoline vehicles. Consider using an electric engine block heater, especially if you park your truck for extended periods.
